Last summer I was fortunate enough to take a vacation to Iceland. It was a magical place and if you ever have a chance to see it you must. One night we stayed at the Hotel Hellnar which is on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. In the lobby was a bookcase with instructions to “Take a Book, Leave a Book.” I had just finished the extremely fascinating The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, the Epidemic that Shaped Our History and decided to leave it behind with a brief note and my contact email address.
Monday morning I awoke to an email from a German doctor who heads an infectious disease unit in a German state. She wrote to tell me how much she enjoyed the book and the story of Walter Reed and his cohorts.
It brought a smile to my face.
